Camino Portuguese & Spanish Spiritual Variant
October 28-November 8, 2026

Overview of the Camino Portuguese & Spanish Spiritual Variant
3 interwoven trails. 2 countries. 1 extraordinary journey. Join us on this one of a kind Camino di Santiago pilgrimage.
Rooted in over a thousand years of history, the Camino de Santiago traces its origins to 44 AD, when the apostle James—after preaching in Hispania—was beheaded in Jerusalem by order of Herod Agrippa I. Our journey from Caminha to Santiago de Compostela follows a scenic and soulful stretch of the Portuguese Way, weaving together sections of the Coastal Route, the Central Route, and the beautiful Spiritual Variant, a detour rich with legend and natural beauty. Over ten days and approximately 90 miles across two countries, we walk through river valleys, eucalyptus forests, and seaside villages, tracing quiet paths along the Minho River, crossing into Spain, and continuing north through Galicia. The Spiritual Variant includes a symbolic boat ride along the Ulla River, echoing the mythic final journey of Saint James’ remains.

With daily distances of 8–12 miles, the pace allows space to take in the landscape, experience local culture, and move through the day with presence and intention. Late October and early November offer ideal walking conditions, with mild daytime temperatures typically ranging from 60–70°F (15–20°C) and cooler mornings and evenings. Upon arriving in Santiago, having walked more than the required 100 km (62.5 miles), you will be eligible to receive the Compostela, the official certificate of pilgrimage. For those less focused on the credential, any day can be shortened with van support, offering flexibility and rest when needed.

Day 1-October 28
Fly to Porto, Portugal (OPO)
It is recommended to make your flight arrangements early from your hometown.
Day 2-October 29
Transfer from Porto to Caminha (D)
The town of Caminha, a picturesque riverside village nestled at the mouth of the Minho River, can be reached from Porto by taxi (about 1.5 hours) or public transport (about 2 hours). It’s a peaceful and scenic place to begin our journey, where cobbled streets wind past stone houses, cozy cafés, and welcoming restaurants. Key landmarks include the Igreja Matriz de Caminha, a charming church with Manueline and Baroque elements, and the Fortaleza de Santiago da Barra, a historic fortress guarding the river entrance. The Minho River, which flows south and west across Galicia before curving to form part of the border between Spain and Portugal, stretches 210 miles (340 km), making it the fourth longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. Along Caminha’s riverfront, views open across the water to Spain, and for those inclined, there’s the option to birdwatch along the estuary, ride the short ferry across the border, or visit the hilltop viewpoint (miradouro) for sweeping panoramas. In the evening, the group will gather for introductions and a shared dinner to review the plan for the days ahead. Overnight: Caminha Design & Wine Hotel A chic boutique hotel in Caminha that blends avant-garde design with a celebration of local wine culture. Hotel Porta do Sol Conference & SPA A stylish riverside hotel offering panoramic views, and spa facilities. Hotel Paço de Vitorino A nature-surrounded retreat combining historical elegance with modern comfort just outside Caminha. Pousada de Caminha A charming inn set in a 16th-century building, offering historic ambiance and sweeping views of the Minho River.

Day 3-October 30
Walk Caminha – Vila Nova de Cervira (10 miles/16 km); (B/L)
-
Time: 4-5 hours
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel in Caminha, we set out on a peaceful 10-mile (16 km) walk along the banks of the Minho River. The path is mostly flat with minimal elevation gain, making it a gentle start to our journey. We follow quiet country roads and shaded riverside trails, the calm waters of the Minho accompanying us on our right, with views of Spain just across the river. Along the way, we pass through sleepy hamlets like Seixas and Lanhelas, where we can stop for a coffee or visit the 17th-century church tucked in among stone houses. The landscape offers space for reflection, with birdsong overhead and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. As we approach Vila Nova de Cerveira, the town’s hilltop sculpture “O Cervo” comes into view, welcoming us to this charming riverside town known for its art. Upon arrival, we can enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants around the main square (Praça da Liberdade). We will have time to explore the town and then will transfer back to Caminha. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. Overnight: Caminha
Day 4-October 31
Walk Vila Nova de Cerveira - Valenca (9 miles/14.5 km); (B/L)
-
Time: 4-5 hours
After breakfast, we transfer from Caminha to Vila Nova de Cerveira to begin our walk to Valença, following a scenic route through countryside and forested paths. As we leave the riverside behind, the trail rises gently, revealing shifting views of the surrounding landscape. The day begins with a stretch along a roadside sidewalk before the Camino turns into the forest, where we follow an old cobbled road once used for local travel. Rolling hills, birdsong, and traditional stone farmhouses accompany us along the way. As we near Valença, the town’s imposing 13th-century fortress walls come into view, offering a dramatic entrance into its historic center. We’ll enjoy lunch in the heart of the old town before checking into our next accommodation. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Valença. Valença’s main attraction is its impressive fortress, a vast star-shaped structure with double walls that once guarded the border between Portugal and Spain. Within the fortress, cobbled streets wind past baroque churches, stone archways, and traditional shops known for linen and embroidery. From the ramparts, you can take in sweeping views of the Minho River and the Spanish town of Tui just across the water. The Igreja de Santo Estêvão, perched near the fortress gates, is worth a visit for its elegant interior, while the old military barracks and cannons offer glimpses into the town’s strategic past. Strolling the walls at sunset is one of the most memorable ways to experience Valença. Overnight: Valenca Pousada de Valença Set within a 16th-century fortress, this elegant pousada combines historic charm with modern comfort and panoramic views of the Minho River. Hotel Lara A welcoming, family-run hotel near Valença’s center, offering a peaceful stay and convenient access to local sights. Overnight: Valenca

Day 6-November 2
Walk O Porrino – Redondela (9 miles/15km); (B/L)
-
Time: 4-5 hours
After breakfast, we transfer back to O Porriño and start our walk on a more peaceful stretch of the Camino. The trail leads us into the Galician countryside, gradually climbing through shaded forest paths and quiet backroads. Four miles into the walk, we reach the small village of Mos, home to the church of Santa Eulalia and a classic pilgrim statue welcoming us. Here, we can take a break at one of the local cafés in the plaza. The only significant climb today is the ascent to the Santiaguiño chapel, where we gain 500 feet over 2 miles. We then descend gently through eucalyptus groves and hamlets. As we approach Redondela, we’re greeted by the dramatic stone railway viaducts arching over the town. We’ll stop here for a well-earned lunch. After lunch, we transfer to Pontevedra, where we check into our next hotel and have time to explore the lively city. Pontevedra’s highlights begin with the Santuario da Peregrina, a unique scallop-shell-shaped chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Pilgrims, a symbol of the Camino de Santiago. The charming Praza da Leña offers a classic Galician scene, with arcaded stone buildings and lively tapas cafés. Nearby, the Igrexa de San Bartolomé stands out with its ornate baroque façade and serene interior. The Museo de Pontevedra, spread across several historic buildings, showcases Galician art, archaeology, and religious treasures. Wandering through the Old Town (Casco Antiguo) reveals a beautifully preserved tangle of granite streets, medieval squares, and the rhythm of local life. Overnight: Pontevedra Parador de Pontevedra A refined hotel in a 16th-century palace in the Old Town, blending Renaissance elegance with modern comfort and regional cuisine. Day 7-November 3
Walk Redondela - Pontevedra (12 miles/20 km); (B/L)
-
Time: 5-6 hours
After breakfast, we begin the day with a short morning transfer back to Redondela to start our walk. Leaving town, we gradually climb through shaded woods and quiet rural roads, occasionally catching glimpses of the Ría de Vigo. The elevation gain is gentle but steady over the first three miles, leading us down into the coastal town of Arcade. Here, we can take a break for coffee or a snack by the water before crossing the Verdugo River on the medieval Ponte Sampaio—a site of historical significance from the Peninsular War. On the far side of the bridge, the trail begins a steady ascent through forest paths toward the Capilla de Santa Marta. We follow peaceful trails, pausing for lunch along the way, before descending into Pontevedra along age-worn stone paths. Entering through the historic O Burgo district, we arrive back in the city by afternoon. There’s time to wander the old town or relax in one of Pontevedra’s vibrant plazas. A gentle yoga session will be offered in the late afternoon or early evening. Overnight: Pontevedra

Day 8-November 4
Walk Pontevedra - Armenteira (11 miles/17.5 km); (B/D)
-
Time: 5 to 6 hours
After breakfast in Pontevedra, we start our walk along the Variante Espiritual, a peaceful and scenic alternative to the central Camino. The walk from Combarro to Armenteira is a beautiful but challenging 7-mile hike. Starting in the charming coastal village of Combarro, the path leaves the sea behind and climbs steadily into the Galician hills on shaded forest trails. The terrain alternates between rocky paths, woodland dirt tracks, and quiet paved lanes, offering occasional sweeping views of the Ría de Pontevedra below. It's a peaceful, mostly remote stretch. The reward for the effort comes at the serene Monastery of Armenteira, a 12th-century Cistercian site nestled among the trees, offering a quiet and contemplative end to the day's hike. A couple of local cafes offer lunch. You’ll have time to explore the monastery before we transfer to our hotel in Vilanova d’Arousa, a scenic riverside town in Galicia. We will gather for dinner at one of the seaside restaurants to sample the area’s famous seafood and albariño wine. Overnight: Vilanova d’Arousa Hotel Arco Iris A beachfront hotel with spacious rooms, friendly service, and a peaceful setting steps from Playa del Terrón. Day 9-November 5
Walk Armenteira – Vilanova de Arousa (12 miles/ 20 km); (B/L)
-
Time: 5.5-6.5 hours
After breakfast and a transfer back to Armenteira, we begin the day with one of the most beautiful stretches of the Camino: the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga—the Trail of Stone and Water. This peaceful forest path follows a gentle downhill route alongside the Armenteira River, winding through mossy woodlands, past ancient watermills, small stone bridges, and shaded groves. The sound of running water and birdsong is constant as we descend gradually through the Galician countryside. About halfway through, we pass through Ribadumia, a small village with cafés and shops—an ideal place to stop for a lunch break. The terrain becomes more open as we reach the estuary, with views of vineyards and the distant Ría de Arousa. From here, the path flattens out and crosses through small villages and farm tracks as we make our way toward Vilanova de Arousa. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. Overnight: Vilanova d’Arousa

Day 10-November 6
Vilanova de Arousa – Pontecesures (Traslatio boat ride); walk Pontecesures to Teo (10 miles); (B/L)
-
Time: 4-5 hours
This morning we begin a unique and symbolic part of the Camino: the Traslatio boat ride, retracing the legendary route of Saint James’ remains as they were brought by boat up the Ría de Arousa to Padrón. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, winding through a peaceful estuary dotted with mussel farms and lined with forested shores. Along the way, we pass 17 ancient stone crosses (cruceiros) marking the only maritime Way of the Cross in the world—a meditative and memorable part of the pilgrimage. The Traslatio is recognized as an official part of the camino and does not disqualify a pilgrim from receiving the Compostela. We arrive at the port of Pontecesures from which we will walk 2 miles to Padrón, a town deeply tied to the origins of the Camino. After visiting the Igrexa de Santiago and the Pedrón stone— where Saint James’ boat was said to be moored—we begin our walk toward Teo. The trail gently climbs out of Padrón on quiet country lanes and forest paths, passing through small villages, fields, and chestnut groves. This final stretch is peaceful and rural, with a few cafés in hamlets like Esclavitude or A Picaraña, to stop for a lunch. We arrive in Teo by late afternoon and transfer to our hotel to relax. Overnight: Santiago de Compostella Hotel Santiago Plaza Meliá A modern hotel with excellent amenities and easy access to Santiago’s attractions, ideal for both business and leisure stays. Eurostars Gran Hotel Santiago A comfortable and conveniently located hotel with spacious rooms and garden views, close to the city center. Quinta da Auga Hotel Spa Relais & Châteaux A luxurious riverside retreat offering refined spa experiences and gourmet dining in a peaceful natural setting just outside the city. San Francisco Hotel Monumento A beautifully restored historic hotel in the heart of Santiago, combining elegant architecture with top-notch facilities and cultural charm.

Day 11-November 7
Walk Teo – Santiago de Compostela (8 miles/13 km); (B/D)
-
Time: 3.5-4.5 hours
After a short transfer back to the trail after breakfast, we’ll embark on our final 8 mile walk from Teo to Santiago de Compostela, which unfolds over gentle country roads, forested paths, and small villages before gradually merging into the city’s outskirts. The terrain rolls softly, with a steady but manageable climb toward the end. Early on, we’ll pass through quiet spots like A Grela and Cacheiras, where small cafés offer a good place for coffee and a pause. There are plenty of cafes along the way for refreshments including the lively town of O Milladoiro, where pilgrims traditionally caught their first glimpse of Santiago’s cathedral spires in the distance—a powerful and emotional marker. Beyond Milladoiro, the path becomes more suburban, weaving through A Rocha Vella and gently climbing to Alto do Agro dos Monteiros, where once again the cathedral’s towers come into view, calling you forward. The final stretch winds through narrow, historic streets before opening onto the grand expanse of Praza do Obradoiro, where our journey reaches its profound and unforgettable end. Those who walked the entirety of the journey will be eligible to obtain a Compostela at the pilgrim office. We’ll meet for a goodbye dinner. Overnight: Santiago de Compostela
