Overview of Thailand

Our multi‑adventure wellness retreat combines yoga, nature, and cultural exploration in northern Thailand. We begin in Chiang Mai, the 'Rose of the North,' where golden temples rise above forested hills. We balance adventure and restoration with yoga, massage, and cooking lessons amid the region’s botanical gardens and mountain sanctuaries. Our journey continues north to Chiang Rai, gateway to the Golden Triangle, where intricate temples, hill tribe villages, and calm riverscapes create an unforgettable retreat conclusion.

The historic Old City, encircled by ancient walls and a moat, brims with centuries-old traditions that seamlessly meet modern vibrancy.  We’ll explore remarkable temples like Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh and venture along jungle trails leading to hidden waterfalls just a short journey out of town.

The historic Old City of Chiang Mai, encircled by ancient walls and a moat, carries centuries of tradition that meet the energy of modern life. We’ll wander through remarkable temples such as Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, and enjoy day trips to the countryside to hike jungle paths toward quiet waterfalls. The buzz of scooters, the sight of saffron-robed monks collecting alms, and the aromas drifting from street vendors ladling out bowls of khao soi create a sensory tapestry that makes Chiang Mai unforgettable.

Just to the northeast, Chiang Rai--set near the storied “Golden Triangle” where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge--offers its own compelling blend of heritage and contemporary culture. Once the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom, the city reveals its history through landmarks like the White Temple, the Blue Temple, and Doi Tung Gardens. Rolling hills, sweeping tea fields, and the Mekong River frame days filled with discoveries and flavors: nam ngiao, sai ua, and a cold coconut or fresh fruit juice after exploring.

You’ll leave with memories of yoga sessions among songbirds, gentle encounters with elephants, unhurried walks beneath towering teak trees and centuries-old stupas, street-food tastings beneath glowing lanterns, and countless moments shaped by Thailand’s legendary hospitality. It’s a journey that enriches the spirit, stays with you long after the trip ends, and invites you to return to the “Land of Smiles.”

Day 3

Yoga & Old City Temples; (B/L/D)

Buffet breakfast is available from 6:30-10:00. At 10:00, we will meet for poolside yoga and a short briefing of the week’s activities. Getting morning sunlight in your eyes helps ease the jetlag! In the afternoon we will head to the Women’s Prison Massage Center which is a social enterprise providing vocational training for ex-prisoners in Thai massage services, enabling them to earn a livelihood after their release. We will relax for a one-hour Thai foot massage with the assurance that we’re contributing to the rehabilitation and empowerment of the inmates. More information is available at: https://dignitynetwork.org/womens-massage-center. We will follow up the massage with stops at some of Chiang Mai’s most notable landmarks such as Wat Phra Singh (a temple known for its Buddha statue and stunning Lanna architecture which combines intricately carved teak, multi-tiered roofs and bell shaped stupas), Wat Chedi Luang (famous for its massive stupa) and Three Kings Monument (a historical monument honoring the three founders of Chiang Mai, surrounded by lovely gardens). We will end the day with a group dinner.

Day 4

Market Tour, Cooking Class & Waterfall; (B/L)

If you are joining cooking school, it is suggested to skip breakfast at the hotel because we will have breakfast in the market. Our excursion will last from about 8:30-16:30, beginning with transport in a songthaew (a converted pick-up truck with parallel benches that fit 8-10 passengers) to a local open air market where we’ll be introduced to fragrant herbs, colorful tropical fruits and other essential ingredients that will feature in the Thai dishes we prepare. The guide will purchase some prepared foods which we can enjoy for breakfast with coffee or tea in the market. After breakfast we’ll proceed to cooking school where we’ll each have a chance to make and enjoy a multi course lunch including your choice of salad, soup, curry, stir-fry, noodles, and dessert. We’ll receive recipes to recreate the dishes at home. On our way back to the resort, we’ll stop at the Bua Thong Waterfall, famous for its limestone-rich rocks that create a "sticky" surface, allowing a surprisingly easy climb up the waterfall without slipping. After the excursion, you’ll have the rest of the evening free to relax and enjoy the beautiful botanic gardens. Dinner will be on your own. (The cooking school will send us home with leftovers from our lunch feast or you can dine at the hotel restaurant.)

Day 5

Forest Meditation & Nimman; (B/L/D)

Finish breakfast by 7:30 if you wish to join the morning activities. We will drive to Wat Umong, an inviting forest temple known for its ancient tunnels, and meditative atmosphere. We will explore the grounds and participate in guided meditation. Please wear modest clothing for this activity (covering knees and shoulders). Then we will drive a few minutes to Angkaew Reservoir to walk on a quiet pedestrian path with a chance to do yoga on the banks of the reservoir. If you didn’t eat an early breakfast at the hotel, you can buy coffee and brunch at a cafe overlooking the reservoir. We will return to the resort for lunch and time to rest, swim or explore the botanic gardens. In the late afternoon, we’ll leave for the trendy Nimman district, known for its vibrant, creative atmosphere. We will stop by a “cat café,” where you can enjoy a beverage of your choice while interacting with adorable resident cats. You’ll have time to browse the numerous boutiques and art galleries at One Nimman, a cultural mall blending traditional Lanna-inspired architecture with modern design. We’ll have dinner in the area and return to the resort.

Day 6

Doi Inthanon National Park; (B/L)

We will depart for a full day tour of Doi Inthanon National Park at 7:30. Please finish your breakfast by then or request a packed breakfast to carry with you if you prefer to eat along the way. There will also be numerous chances to buy drinks and snacks throughout the day. You should pack a warm jacket, long pants, hat, and gloves for today’s activities as it can be chilly (around 40 degrees F or cooler) as we gain elevation. After a scenic drive, we will end at Doi Inthanon, the highest point in Thailand at 8415 feet. We will walk a short distance in the cloud forest trail at Ang Ka Luang and then drive to Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail where we will hike 2 undulating miles through verdant jungle and past giant Rhododendrons and streams and end at a breathtaking cliffside with panoramic mountain views on a clear day. We will head to the King and Queen pagodas to admire vibrant flower gardens and spectacular views before moving on to a Hmong market featuring fresh strawberries and apples, various dried fruits and nuts, honey, traditionally produced plum wine and infused whiskey. We will have lunch in a Karen village followed by a chance to taste their locally grown Arabica coffee and herbal teas. The day will conclude with a visit to the cascading Wachirathan Waterfall before returning to the resort in the early evening. Dinner will be on your own.

Day 7

Doi Suthep & Monk’s Trail; Yoga; (B/D)

A packed breakfast will be provided for those joining the morning excursion. We will depart at 6:00 for the 45-minute drive to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a spectacular gilded temple perched atop Chiang Mai’s highest mountain, revered for its spiritual significance and sunrise views. According to legend, its location was chosen when a Buddha relic carried by a white elephant came to rest on the mountain. Please wear modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered). After climbing the 300 steps to the temple and taking in the views, we’ll continue to Wat Pha Lat, a quiet forest monastery once used as a resting place for monks ascending Doi Suthep. Here, we’ll participate in guided meditation followed by breakfast beside the waterfall. We then hike down the Monk’s Trail (~2 miles) through the forest, emerging near a small café where we’ll stop for coffee or tea. We return to the resort lunch on your own and free afternoon to rest, swim, or enjoy Thai massage. Sunset yoga will be offered poolside or in the botanical gardens, followed by group dinner.

Elephant Sanctuary; Yoga (B/L)

Please plan to finish breakfast by 7:30 if you wish to join the excursion to the elephant sanctuary or request a packed breakfast to carry with you if you prefer to eat along the way. At 7:30 we will be driven to the Elephant Nature Park Sanctuary, a refuge dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating elephants while promoting ethical tourism through a strict no-riding policy. Upon arrival, we join a guided walk with the staff and the elephants, learning about their history and the sanctuary’s conservation work. Along the way, we visit the river that skirts the park to observe the herd in their natural environment and gain insight into their habitat and daily life. We’ll also have the special opportunity to meet Wan Mai, the elephant supported by donations from the Peace through Yoga Foundation. A vegan buffet lunch awaits us, offering a range of Asian and international dishes. In the afternoon, we return to the resort with time to relax before joining a gentle yoga session designed to restore and center the body. The day ends with a group dinner, sharing impressions and reflecting on the rare experience of observing these remarkable animals.

After checking into our next hotel Le Meridien Chiang Rai and having time to rest and enjoy the riverside views, we’ll head to the bustling Chiang Rai Night Bazaar for dinner—a lively evening market brimming with handmade textiles, silver jewelry, wood and bamboo crafts, herbal soaps, teas, and local artwork. You’ll have time to wander among the stalls and sample northern Thai street foods like Khao Soi, Pad Thai, green curry, grilled skewers, and mango sticky rice—or, for the adventurous, durian, BBQ scorpion, or even snake whiskey. Each person will pay for their own dinner. We’ll head back to the resort when you’ve had your fill of shopping and eating.

Christine bio.jpg

Christine Klotz, MPH, has lived as a nomad for more than 15 years, balancing a career working as an international public health professional in refugee camps around the world with long distance walking for thousands of miles in more than 100 countries. She has lived in various locations in Thailand including Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phagnan and Koh Lanta and is currently based in Chiang Mai, participating in the thriving digital nomad scene, and sampling an array of yoga retreats, hiking excursions and cooking schools.  On her first day in Chiang Mai she was immediately reminded of the hospitality of Thai people when she got disoriented on a forest trail in an area without mobile phone coverage.  As sunset was approaching and her phone battery was dying, she hitchhiked with a local family back to their village where they charged her phone with their solar battery, fed her, dressed her in the largest Santa sweater they could rustle from the closet to stem the post run chills, and drove her to a nearby main road to catch a taxi, finally bequeathing her with a bag of freshly boiled eggs from their free range chickens and all the while staunchly refusing any kind of material compensation with broad smiles.  They did, however, reluctantly accept the return of the prized Christmas sweater.  Christine is always dreaming about the next adventure. “It's a beautiful world, and I'll be thrilled to explore it with you one step at a time.”

Chris Yovanovich, B.A., E-RYT 500, YACEP, R.M., is a songwriter/singer who has been teaching yoga full time since 2006. In addition to creating and leading several nationally accredited yoga teacher training courses over the past 12 years, Chris shares her workshop on Working with Trauma through Yoga at women's shelters, hospitals, and businesses throughout Indiana. She teaches several weekly meditative and intuitive, restorative/yin and flow yoga classes at various studios in Indiana.  Chris worked in the medical industry for 15 years as QMA & medical social worker. After escaping 3 years of domestic violence, she had a health crisis. After seeking help through allopathic medicine, she found little to no relief. She finally gave yoga a try where she finally found relief. She has since dedicated her life to sharing the sacred healing art and science of yoga with others. She specializes focusing on those needing relief from symptoms associated with stress and trauma.  Chris has helped lead several trips to India and Costa Rica for Peace through Yoga Foundation and recently to beautiful Belize. Like all of the retreats offered by Peace through Yoga Foundation, this retreat is more than just a getaway—it's an immersive experience designed to reconnect you with your true self. Under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher, each day unfolds with intention and serenity, allowing you to dive deep into your practice and rediscover balance. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or a beginner, the sessions are crafted to meet you exactly where you are, with a gentle yet powerful flow that cultivates mindfulness, strength, and flexibility. Yoga & Meditation  Yoga, at its core, is about union—connecting the body, mind, and spirit. Throughout the retreat, you'll explore a blend of Hatha and Vinyasa yoga, with morning and evening practices designed to awaken your body and soothe your mind. With each stretch and breath, you'll release tension and open up to new possibilities. Meditation will guide you on a journey inward, helping you cultivate presence and peace amidst the natural beauty surrounding you. Whether it's seated meditation, walking meditation, or guided mindfulness sessions, you’ll find yourself learning to quiet the mind, letting go of stress, and discovering the stillness that resides within. Thailand: A Source of Inspiration The retreat’s location allows you to not only practice yoga in a serene and beautiful space but also immerse yourself in Thailand’s culture and history. Take a mindful walk through vibrant local markets, where the scents of incense and fresh fruit fill the air. Explore peaceful Buddhist temples, where centuries-old teachings inspire moments of quiet contemplation. The magic of Thailand is woven into every corner of your retreat, offering endless opportunities to connect with the land and its people. Inspiration through Music and Sound Music is an essential part of this retreat experience. Whether it's the soft sounds of traditional Thai instruments, the rhythmic beats of local drummers, or the soothing tones of crystal bowls during sound healing sessions, music will be used to elevate your yoga and meditation practice. The resonance of sound brings harmony to the mind and body, offering an additional layer of depth to the retreat. You’ll find that the music becomes a bridge, connecting you to the present moment and to the deep wisdom within you. Finding Peace and Inspiration As the retreat progresses, you will not only reconnect with your yoga practice but also reconnect with your inner peace. Away from the distractions of everyday life, you will have the space to reflect, to release old patterns, and to cultivate new intentions. You’ll be encouraged to find stillness in the midst of beauty, to find gratitude in the small things, and to discover inspiration in the rhythms of nature and culture that surround you. By the end of this retreat, you will leave not just with a deeper understanding of yoga and meditation, but with a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. You will leave having found a place of peace within yourself that you can carry with you, no matter where life takes you. This is more than a retreat—it’s a transformative journey to reconnect, rejuvenate, and be inspired by the vibrant beauty of Thailand. A journey where you’ll nourish your mind, body, and soul, and return home with a fresh perspective on life and the peace that comes with it.
