Spanish Camino del Norte
(Part 1 of 5)
October 15-25, 2026

Overview of the Spanish Camino del Norte
Rooted in over a thousand years of history, the Camino de Santiago has long drawn seekers from across the world, each step a thread in the tapestry of spiritual, cultural, and personal discovery. What began as a medieval pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela has evolved into a journey that transcends religious boundaries, inviting walkers of all backgrounds to reflect, connect, and grow. Along its varied paths—through quiet villages, rolling countryside, and ancient cities—pilgrims find not only the echoes of those who walked before them but also moments of clarity, challenge, and unexpected grace. The Camino endures not just as a route marked by scallop shells and waymarkers, but as a living tradition that continues to shape the hearts of those who walk it.

With the surging popularity of the Camino Frances, many trekkers, nature lovers, and spiritual seekers are exploring alternate routes. Among the most stunning is the Camino del Norte, which traces Spain’s northern Atlantic coastline from the Basque Country to Galicia. With the ocean to the north and the Cantabrian Mountains to the south, this lesser-traveled route offers a quieter, more rugged journey—one steeped in Celtic influence and coastal heritage. It’s a path dotted with fishing villages, seaside chapels dedicated to Mary, and symbols of a different Spain: bagpipes, hard cider, and windswept shores. The Camino del Norte invites pilgrims into landscapes of drama and grace, offering both solitude and soulful conversation.

Never thought you had time or stamina to walk a full Camino? This is your chance. Our October 2026 hike is the first in a five-part series that will take us all the way to Santiago—one section from fall 2026 through 2030. By breaking the pilgrimage into approachable parts, we make space for connection, reflection, and the joy of returning to the path year after year. Pilgrim passport stamps collected along the way never expire, so by the end of the five-year journey, you’ll be eligible to receive the Compostela (certificate of completion) in Santiago.
Camino del Norte Completion Schedule
YEAR | START | END |
---|---|---|
2026 | Irun | Gernika/Bilbao |
2027 | Bilbao | San Vicente de la Barquera |
2028 | San Vicente de la Barquera | Aviles |
2029 | Aviles | Ribadeo |
2030 | Ribadeo | Santiago de Compostela |
Our first section in October 2026 traces the scenic opening stretch of the Camino del Norte—a route that hugs the rugged coastline of the Bay of Biscay before turning inland through forested hills and historic towns. We’ll walk between 65 and 80 miles depending on your daily choice, passing through fishing villages, medieval ports, and rolling countryside. Compared to the more traveled Camino Francés, the Northern Way is known for its dramatic coastal scenery and quieter atmosphere. We begin near San Sebastián, a coastal gem renowned not only for its world-class cuisine—the highest concentration of Michelin stars per capita—but also for its elegant beaches and vibrant cultural scene. From there, we gradually make our way to Guernica, immortalized by Picasso’s famous painting and celebrated as a symbol of Basque identity and democracy.
With daily distances of 7 to 12 miles (with options for extensions), the pace invites a deeper experience—time to savor local cuisine, engage with the region’s rich Basque culture, and form meaningful connections with fellow pilgrims. October offers excellent walking conditions, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 55–70°F (13–21°C) and crisp, mild mornings ideal for setting out on the trail.
A Note on Walking Distances
The suggested routes focus on the most scenic and meaningful stretches of the Camino del Norte, with flexibility built into each day. If you need rest or prefer a shorter walk, van support is always available. Each stage can be adjusted to match your energy level and physical ability, and the group leader will work with you to tailor the day’s walk to suit your needs. With the support driver and leader by your side, you’ll decide how much you want to walk each day—it’s your Camino, your pace.

Layers of sedimentary rock rise in sharp, rhythmic folds, bearing silent witness to million years of Earth’s evolution. The trail winds along the cliffs before turning inland through green hills. From here, we follow quiet country paths and forest tracks, alternating between coastal views and shaded woodland. The undulating trail offers expansive vistas over the ocean. Along the way, we may spot grazing sheep, rustling eucalyptus groves, and the occasional Basque farmhouse tucked into the hillsides. We pause for a lunch in a scenic spot before taking the final descent into Deba, a small seaside town with a wide beach and a relaxed atmosphere. -
Highlights: Panoramic views from Ermita del Calvario chapel overlooking Deba and the surrounding countryside, traversing peaceful forest trails and traditional Basque farmland, villages of Olatz and Markina-Xemein, known for their historic architecture and local culture
Starting the day in Deba, you may choose either a partial or extended hike depending on your energy level. The extended hike begins directly from Deba, while the shorter option includes a van transfer to Olatz, a quiet village nestled in a picturesque rural valley. From Olatz, a steep climb leads us to Arno Pass. Today’s stage is the most remote of the entire Camino del Norte, but it rewards us with bucolic beauty—views of scattered farmhouses, dense woodlands, and rolling meadows as we leave the coast behind for now. Along the way, we’ll enjoy lunch. The trail continues through the heart of the Basque countryside, weaving between shaded forests, open farmland, and quiet lanes with occasional glimpses of distant hilltops. Our walk concludes in Markina-Xemein, a historic town known for its beautifully preserved old quarter and centuries-old tradition of sword and cutlery making. An optional visit to the Basque Sword Museum offers insight into this unique craft and the region’s cultural heritage. We will transfer back to our hotel in the afternoon. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. Overnight: Zumaia / Deba

-
Time: 4-5 hours (partial hike) or 6.5-7.5 hours (extended hike)
-
Highlights: Peaceful forest trails and hidden hamlets, views of pastoral countryside, Gernika’s historic sites including the Tree of Gernika and Peace Museum
You may choose either a partial or extended hike depending on your energy level. The extended hike begins early in the morning with a transfer to Markina, while the partial option includes a mid-morning transfer to Muntibar, a quiet village nestled in a picturesque rural valley to join those who choose the extended hike. As we follow the undulating trail, we pass hamlets and hilltop shrines—humble markers of the region’s deep spiritual heritage. The route is mostly shaded and quiet, with occasional views of distant peaks and the soft clang of cowbells echoing across the valleys. We pause for lunch along the way before descending into Gernika, a town forever linked to the horrors of war and the hope for peace. Once there, we will check into our next hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to rest or explore sights such as the Tree of Gernika, the Assembly House, and the moving Peace Museum. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. We will meet for a group dinner. Walk Pozueta– Larrabetzu (7 miles/ 11 km); (B/L); optional 4 mile extension from Gernika to Pozueta
-
Time: 4-6 hours
-
Highlights: Shaded woodland paths, vineyard-covered hills, traditional Basque farmhouses, and views of Bilbao’s skyline as we approach Larrabetzu
You may choose either a partial or extended hike depending on your energy level. The extended hike begins directly from Gernika, climbing steeply toward Mount Billikario, while the shorter option includes a van transfer to Pozueta, a quiet village in a pastoral valley. This is one of the more demanding stages of the Camino del Norte, winding through the hilly interior of Biscay, away from the coast. The early climb to Mount Billikario while steep, rewards us with peaceful forest paths, sweeping rural vistas, and a sense of remoteness. The route continues through a patchwork of meadows, beech woods, and traditional farmhouses, offering glimpses into Basque rural life. As the day unfolds, the terrain softens into gentler hills and quiet tracks that pass hamlets, stone-farmhouses, and terraced vineyards that hint at the area's winemaking heritage. We stop for lunch in a shady grove, enjoying a well-earned break before the final stretch. Approaching Larrabetzu, we see the faint outline of Bilbao in the distance. We transfer back to Gernika after the walk. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. Overnight: Gernika

Day 10-October 24
Optional hike San Juan de Gzatelugatxe – Bermeo (7 miles/ 11 km); (B/D) (not part of the official Camino del Norte)
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most iconic spots along Spain’s northern coast—a dramatic islet crowned by a hermitage and linked to the mainland by a narrow stone bridge and a winding staircase of 241 steps. The name means "castle rock" in Basque, and its wild, cinematic beauty—famously featured as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones—draws pilgrims, hikers, and photographers alike. We will leave Gernika around 6:30am for a short transfer to the site, arriving before crowds and without needing a timed entry ticket. From the parking area, we descend the winding trail to the sea, cross the arched bridge, and climb the 241 steps to the hermitage perched high above the surf. We can ring the chapel bell three times and can make a wish while taking in sweeping ocean views. Afterward, we begin our coastal hike toward Bermeo, following forested trails and quiet rural roads that trace the dramatic cliffs. We pass oak groves, small farms, and panoramic overlooks of the Bay of Biscay before arriving in the colorful fishing town of Bermeo where you’ll have time for a well-earned lunch on your own by the harbor. We will transfer back to Gernika in the afternoon. For those who do not wish to participate in the optional hike, you could take a day trip to Bilbao which offers a vibrant mix of art, architecture, and Basque culture. Marvel at the striking design of the Guggenheim Museum, stroll the riverfront promenade and explore the Casco Viejo (Old Town), where narrow lanes lead to centuries-old churches, artisan shops, and pintxo bars. Other highlights include the Museo de Bellas Artes, the sleek Zubizuri bridge, and the Mercado de la Ribera—a feast for the senses in one of Europe’s largest covered markets. Gentle yoga will be offered in the late afternoon / early evening. We will meet for a goodbye dinner to toast your completion of the first phase of the spectacular Camino del Norte. Overnight: Gernika

Leticia Troyas Martínez
Leticia Troyas Martínez is from Falces, a small town near Pamplona in northern Spain. Walking is one of the most meaningful parts of her life—a way to connect with herself, others, and the world around her. She has journeyed on foot across Spain, Italy, and Portugal along pilgrimage routes such as the Camino de Santiago and the Via Francigena, drawn by a deep curiosity and a love for both nature and culture. She has also lived in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam at different points in her life. Leticia has worked as a guide on both the Camino and the Francigena, offering transportation, massage services, and stretching sessions to clients. She is currently studying exercise science at the University of Pamplona, with the goal of becoming a physical education instructor for children. Earlier in her career, she worked as a hairdresser in major cities such as London, Madrid, and Milan. But what truly inspires her now is movement—physical, emotional, and spiritual. For Leticia, life is about growing, evolving, and learning—becoming a little more herself with every step.
Yoga Instructor:

Madina Sabirova
Part-time wanderer, full-time soul-seeker, Madina has lived in several countries and states and now calls Zionsville, IN home. Madina walked ancient pilgrim paths like the Fisherman’s Trail, the Camino de Santiago and the Via Francigena, collecting blisters, stories, and the occasional spiritual epiphany. A passionate hiking enthusiast, Madina finds joy in any path that promises a little peace and a lot of perspective. Whether trekking through the Grand Canyon, Zion, Banff, or some unnamed trail that “looked promising,” she believes in the healing power of nature. Recently certified as a yoga teacher, Madina is excited to begin sharing her love for yoga——not as a physical achievement, but as a deeply spiritual journey. For her, yoga is less about touching your toes and more about a gentle invitation to reconnect with the self. When not exploring new destinations, Madina enjoys spending quality time with her kids or local hikes with her dog, who believes every hill is better climbed slowly and with snacks. Whether in stillness or in motion, Madina lives for those moments of connection—with nature, with others, and the kind of adventures that leave you dusty, grateful, and transformed.
