June 7-13, 2026

Overview of Azores

The Azores, an archipelago of nine main islands in the North Atlantic, is a premier wellness destination where nature, adventure, and relaxation harmoniously blend. Situated halfway between the U.S. and mainland Portugal, these islands have long served as a crucial waypoint for explorers, traders, and transatlantic travelers. With their lush volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear crater lakes, and dramatic coastlines, the Azores provide an idyllic setting for our wellness retreat. Scenic trails wind through misty laurel forests, past steaming geothermal vents, and along rugged cliffs, offering both invigorating hikes and serene moments of reflection. Birdwatching enthusiasts will find a paradise here, with the islands serving as an important stopover for migratory species and home to endemic birds like the Azores bullfinch. Rolling green pastures, where cows far outnumber people, stretch across the islands’ verdant cliffs, adding to the tranquil rural charm that defines this unique destination. Summer is the perfect time to visit, with mild, sunny weather ranging from 65–75°F (18–24°C) and the lowest likelihood of rain, allowing for uninterrupted exploration of this breathtaking natural paradise.

The Azores cultivate a deep connection to wellness and balance, rooted in centuries-old traditions of slow living and sustainable agriculture. Our retreat will integrate yoga sessions, meditative coastal walks, and restorative soaks in the islands' natural thermal waters, where geothermal pools and hot springs provide deep relaxation. The ocean itself is a source of renewal, offering opportunities for whale watching, paddleboarding, and wild swimming in volcanic rock pools. The islands also share a rich historical bond with the United States, as Azorean immigrants played a significant role in shaping communities on the east and west coasts. Lajes Field Air Base on Terceira Island, established during World War II, remains a key strategic outpost, reinforcing ties between the two nations.

Food is an integral part of the Azorean wellness experience, centered around fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The islands are renowned for their organic produce, fresh seafood, grass-fed dairy, and antioxidant-rich fruits such as passionfruit and pineapple. A true culinary highlight is the Cozido das Furnas, a traditional dish slow-cooked underground using volcanic steam, embodying the Azores’ deep harmony with nature. With a history shaped by Portuguese explorers, the Azores retain a vibrant cultural heritage, evident in their charming towns, 16th-century churches, and lively festivals. Whether seeking adventure, relaxation, or a culinary journey, the Azores offer a holistic escape that nourishes body, mind, and soul.

Martin Taticek, MA, is a bike tour guide, ski instructor, language teacher, musician, occasional woodworker... an Iyengar yoga and Tai Chi follower…and aspiring DJ and swimming coach. In short, he is a fan of moving and observing his body. He was born and raised in Czechia (formerly Czech Republic), a relatively small country in the heart of Europe otherwise known as the beer country. He is from the second city of Pilsen which gave the world the famous Pilsner Urquell beer in 1842. He moved to Paris for a year to study French and admire the work of impressionists in 2010 as a part of a student exchange program. In 2012 his passion for mountains brought him to Canada mainly for ski instruction, but also hiking, and mountaineering. Martin has hiked to many peaks in the Canadian Rockies and ranges in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. In 2015, he started guiding cycling trips in Central Europe for world-renowned tour operators to keep himself busy during the summer. His current work life balance includes cycling, skiing, woodworking and playing drums for "Balkan Party Band." He recently discovered the benefits of different breathing techniques, and minimalist “total immersion” swimming for his own wellbeing. Martin looks forward to knowing you better over a glass of beer or wine after a rewarding day of hiking and sightseeing.
