Overview of Skiathos, Greece

Skiathos, the green jewel of the Sporades Islands, is renowned for its golden beaches, dense pine forests, and clear blue waters. Despite its small size (19 sq mi / 50 sq km), the island boasts over 60 beaches, including Lalaria Beach, with its striking white cliffs, and Koukounaries Beach, a soft sandy stretch backed by a nature reserve. Skiathos also gained international fame as a filming location for Mamma Mia!, attracting fans eager to see the sun-soaked spots featured in the movie. The lively capital, Skiathos Town, features whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and a waterfront lined with tavernas and cafés, while the historic Bourtzi Peninsula, once a Venetian fortress, now offers cultural events and panoramic sea views. With May temperatures ranging from 64–73°F (18–23°C), visitors can enjoy outdoor activities and sightseeing comfortably, without the peak summer crowds.

Steeped in history, Skiathos has been shaped by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Venetians, and Ottomans, and played a key role in the Greek War of Independence. The Evangelistria Monastery (Holy Monastery of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary) served as a refuge for revolutionaries and is believed to be the site where the first Greek flag was created in 1807, while the medieval settlement of Kastro, perched on a rugged cliff, offers a glimpse into the island’s past through its stone ruins and preserved churches. Today, Skiathos balances tradition with modernity, offering well-marked hiking trails, beachfront resorts with spa and wellness offerings, and a culinary scene highlighting fresh seafood, roasted lamb, and artisan cheeses. The island invites travelers to combine adventure, relaxation, and authentic Greek hospitality amidst its landscapes, history, and coastal beauty.

Arrival to Skiathos; Transfer to Resort; Skiathos Town Walk; (D)

Kassandra Bay Resort is just 3 miles (5 km) from Skiathos Airport (JSI), making for a quick 15-minute transfer by taxi or private shuttle. Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and if you arrive earlier, luggage storage is available while you explore the hotel’s beachfront setting, vibrant gardens, and spa facilities. In the early evening, we head to Skiathos Town for a guided walk through its winding streets and lively squares. The route circles the town, revealing hidden secrets along cobbled lanes, old trade roads, churches, manufacturers’ buildings, and iconic landmarks such as the Commune of the Town, Papadiamantis’ House, the Port, Bourtzi, and the Folklore Museum. This walk offers insight into the island’s architectural heritage—simple, traditional homes shaped by Skiathos and Pelion influences—and the daily rhythms of local life. As the sun lowers, we continue to a monastic overlook for sweeping views of the sea and surrounding hills before concluding the day with dinner at the Windmill Restaurant, perched above the town with panoramic vistas. This introduction to Skiathos blends cultural discovery with memorable scenic perspectives. Kassandra Bay Resort & Spa***** is a luxurious beachfront retreat on Skiathos, located along the golden sands of Vasilias Beach and just a short drive from Skiathos Town. The resort combines comfort and style, with spacious rooms and suites featuring private balconies and sweeping Aegean views. Guests have direct access to clear waters and a classic Mediterranean ambiance. The resort’s five-star amenities cater to wellness and activity, including two outdoor pools, a full-service spa, a fully equipped gym, and plenty of picturesque locations for yoga classes. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding, while nearby hiking trails lead through pine forests to hidden beaches and striking viewpoints. Its location also makes exploring the island’s highlights. Dining at Kassandra Bay highlights fresh Mediterranean flavors and traditional Greek ingredients. The Amvrosia Breakfast Restaurant offers a generous buffet with local breads, cheeses, cured meats, yogurt, honey, and seasonal fruits. Throughout the day, guests can choose from several options, including elevated Mediterranean cuisine at Mesoyios Dining, casual meals and cocktails at Pelagos Lunch Restaurant and KBR Gastrolounge, or light bites and comfort food at Black Olive All Day Restaurant and the poolside Pelagos Bar.

Day 3

Beach and Forest Hike; Yoga (~4.5 miles); (B/L/D)

We begin the day with breakfast at Kassandra Bay Resort, easing into island time before setting out for a yoga hike along Skiathos’ western edge. The route carries us into the Strofilia Forest, where pine-shaded paths soften the pace and invite steady, mindful walking. Over roughly 4.5 miles--about two unhurried hours--we move through this protected landscape toward the coast, emerging first at Agistros Beach for a cool drink at the small seaside kiosk, then continuing along the water past Elias Beach as the light opens and the sea stays close. Our walk leads us to Mandraki Xerxis Beach, where we settle in for a 45-minute yoga practice with the sand beneath our feet and the horizon stretched wide. This coastline has long been a passageway, tied to ancient maritime routes and the movement of Xerxes’ fleet during the Greco-Persian era. Sheltered bays and natural vantage points give the area a feeling of continuity—layers of story held quietly in the land as we pause, breathe, and move. After yoga, there is time to swim, snack, rest, or simply stay still and take in the openness of the beach. We return via a particularly beautiful stretch of the Strofilia Forest, completing the loop in the late afternoon. Back at the hotel, the evening is left open to unwind before dinner at the resort restaurant. Overnight: Kassandra Bay Resort*****

Day 4

Magic Forest Hike (~4 miles); Kechria Beach (B/L/D)

After breakfast, we’ll begin the day with a morning yoga session at the resort before transferring to a hidden monastery, the starting point of our hike through the enchanting Magic Forest. The trail winds past ancient plane trees, olive groves, and quiet valleys, with highlights including the Monastery of Kechria, historic watermills, and old oil presses along the Kechria creek. This area, part of the Aesthetic Forest of Skiathos and a designated Wildlife Refuge, is rich with diverse vegetation—coniferous and broadleaf forests, lush groves, and abundant waterways. The hike ends at Paralia Kechria, a white sand beach perfect for a refreshing swim. Those preferring a slower start can skip the hike and spend the morning relaxing by the sea. We’ll gather for a traditional Greek lunch at Kechria Tarsanas Taverna before returning to Kassandra Bay in the afternoon. There will be time to enjoy the resort’s spa or pools before heading into Skiathos Town for dinner. This route offers a beautiful mix of cultural and natural landmarks, from the hidden monastery to the untouched beaches of Kechria and Lygaries, creating an unforgettable experience of the island’s wild and protected landscapes. Overnight: Kassandra Bay Resort*****

Day 5

Evangelistria Monastery Tour and Hike (~5 miles); Afternoon Yoga (B/L/D)

In the midmorning we will transfer to the Monastery of Evangelistria, an 18th-century sanctuary that stands as a symbol of faith and resilience on Skiathos. More than a place of worship, it reflects the strength of Greek Orthodox tradition during turbulent times, particularly under Ottoman rule. Its stone architecture, sacred rituals, and peaceful surroundings offer a profound connection to the island’s history. After exploring the monastery, we will set out on a ~3 hour hike along one of Skiathos’ main historical routes, weaving through olive groves, agricultural landscapes, cobbled paths, and shaded chapels. Along the way, we’ll take in striking viewpoints that reveal the island’s natural beauty. Our hike concludes at Panorama Restaurant, an Italian eatery known for its handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and fresh seafood prepared with Mediterranean flair. After lunch, we return to the hotel for time to rest. A late afternoon yoga session will be offered followed by a dinner in Skiathos Town, rounding out a day that blends history, culture, and the wild landscapes of Skiathos. Overnight: Kassandra Bay Resort*****

Day 6

Hike to Kastro (~3 miles); Seaside Lunch; Explore Skiathos Town; (B/L/D)

In the mid-morning, we will set out on one of Skiathos’ most scenic hikes along the island’s rugged North Coast. The trail winds through olive groves, shaded forests, and ancient chapels before reaching Kastro, the island’s medieval fortress dramatically perched on a rocky headland above the Aegean. Built in the 14th century to protect inhabitants from pirate raids, Kastro’s narrow stone streets, weathered walls, and scattered ruins tell the story of a once-thriving capital. From its heights, sweeping views of the coastline and sea offer a striking glimpse into the island’s past. After exploring the fortress, we’ll continue down to the shore for lunch at Kastro Beach Taverna, where traditional Greek dishes are served in a beautiful seaside setting. The late afternoon is free to wander Skiathos Town’s lively squares and vibrant streets, browsing local shops and taking in the atmosphere, before we gather again for dinner in town to close the day. Day 7

Morning Yoga; Peaks Hike (~3 miles); Parissi Winery; (B/L/D)

Have a restful morning at the hotel, beginning the day at a gentle pace. A late morning yoga session will be offered before we head into town for lunch, enjoying local dishes and the relaxed atmosphere of Skiathos. Afterward, we’ll prepare for an afternoon adventure exploring one of the island’s most scenic trails. In the afternoon, we’ll hike the Peaks Trail, a 3-mile route that links several of Skiathos’ highest points, including Agios Antonios, Korafa Peak, Mytikas, and Profitis Ilias. Though the island’s elevations are modest, the trail offers sweeping views of Skiathos, nearby Pelion, and the surrounding islands of Skopelos and Alonissos. Along the way, we’ll pass through farmland and stretches of natural vegetation within the Aesthetic Forest of Skiathos. The day concludes with a sunset wine tasting and tapas-style dinner at Parissi Winery, where regional flavors pair perfectly with panoramic views of the sea and rolling hills.

Day 8

Private Boat trip to Lalaria Beach and Tsougrias Island; (B/L/D)

In the late morning we will embark on an exciting boat trip around the unforgettable Lalaria Beach and Tsougrias Island, where we can swim in the clear waters and explore the island's secluded sea caves Skotini and Galazia. Located on the north coast and only accessible by boat, the caves are characterized by their difference in color. Skotini is the dark cave with a low and narrow entrance blocking most light from entering. Galazia is the blue cave and is larger than Skotini. The waters glow an otherworldly color and its reflections dance on the cave’s textured rocks. For lunch, we will enjoy fresh, local dishes at a taverna on Tsougrias Island. Afterward, we’ll have some free time to relax at Megali Ammos Beach. You will have time to relax at the hotel after returning from the boat trip. The day will conclude with a journaling exercise and farewell dinner of delicious Greek specialties and music.
