May 16-24, 2026

Overview of Skiathos, Greece

Skiathos, the green jewel of the Sporades Islands, is known for its golden beaches, dense pine forests, and clear blue waters. Despite its small size (19 sq mi/ 50 sq km), the island features over 60 beaches, including the famous Lalaria Beach, with its striking white cliffs, and Koukounaries Beach, a stretch of soft sand backed by a nature reserve. The island’s capital, Skiathos Town, is a lively harbor with whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and a waterfront lined with tavernas and cafés. The historic Bourtzi Peninsula, once a Venetian fortress, now serves as a cultural venue with panoramic sea views. In May, temperatures range from 64-73°F (18-23°C), providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities and sightseeing without the peak summer crowds.
image19.png
With a history dating back to antiquity, Skiathos has been shaped by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Venetians, and Ottomans. The island played a key role in the Greek War of Independence, with Evangelistria Monastery serving as a refuge for revolutionaries and the site where the first Greek flag was believed to be created in 1807. The medieval settlement of Kastro, perched on a rugged cliff, was once the island’s fortified capital, offering insight into its past through its stone ruins and preserved churches. Today, Skiathos maintains its Greek character, combining traditional architecture with modern comforts. With mild temperatures and fewer visitors in May, travelers can explore its history, landscapes, and coastal scenery at a relaxed pace.

For those seeking both activity and relaxation, Skiathos offers a mix of hiking, wellness, and exceptional food. The islands are home to well-marked trails, such as the Kechria to Kastro route, which passes through pine forests and historic monasteries. Beachfront resorts offer spa treatments and holistic therapies overlooking the Aegean. The local cuisine highlights fresh seafood, organic produce, and regional specialties, with dishes like grilled octopus, roasted lamb, and artisan cheeses served at seaside tavernas. Whether exploring the islands’ hiking trails, unwinding with a wellness retreat, or dining by the water, Skiathos in spring offers a balance of adventure, relaxation, and authentic Greek hospitality.

Day 3-May 18

Hike to the Peaks (3 miles); explore Skiathos town; yoga nidra (B/L/D)

After breakfast and a relaxed morning, we will transfer to the trailhead for a scenic hike along the “Peaks” trail—passing by Agios Antonios, Korafa Peak, Mytikas, and Profitis Ilias—we stop to take in the island from above. The trail is about 3 miles long, fairly easy, and takes around 2 hours to complete. It’s a great way to get your bearings while enjoying wide views of Skiathos and the surrounding sea.

Next, we head to The Peaks lookout point, a great introduction to the island’s landscape, history, and culture. Informational signs explain how the island came to be, from its volcanic origins to its local traditions. After soaking it all in, we settle into a late lunch at the Panorama Restaurant, where the view continues through wide glass windows. From there, it’s off to town for a walk and a feel for local life.

We will have a group dinner followed by a quiet Yoga Nidra session to unwind, rest the body, and ease into sleep.

Day 4-May 19

Faith and Antiquities walk (4 miles); Parissi winery (B/L/D)

After breakfast we will embark on the "Faith and Antiquities" hike, 4 mile circular route that typically takes around 3 hours to complete. The trail begins at the Church of Agia Anastasia in Pyrgi, passing through several chapels—including Agios Panteleimonas, Panagia Glykofilousa, and Agios Ioannis Apokefalis—before reaching the historic Kastro area. The route then continues to chapels like Panagia Doman and Panagia Kardasi before looping back to the starting point. The terrain includes broadleaf forests and olive groves, offering a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. This moderate hike involves an ascent and descent of approximately 355 meters each. It's advisable to wear sturdy footwear and carry water, as the trail can be uneven and exposed to the sun in certain sections. After completing the hike, we will have lunch and enjoy a visit to Parissis Winery to sample local wines. We will return to the resort to rest and meet for a group dinner. Day 5-May 20

Evangelisa Monastery; learn about Greek Orthodox religion; hike (3 miles); afternoon yoga (B/L/D)

Evangélisa Monastery is not just a serene place of worship; it's a deep well of history and culture, reflecting the role of Greek Orthodox religion in shaping both the island and the nation. Founded in the 18th century, this monastery stands as a testament to the strength of faith through turbulent times, especially during the Ottoman occupation. Greek Orthodox Christianity has woven itself into the fabric of Skiathos’ identity—its traditions, customs, and values echoing through the architecture, the rituals, and the landscape surrounding the monastery. Here, you can feel the weight of centuries, where faith and resilience converge in prayer and stone. After exploring the monastery, we will embark on a hike nearby (3 miles), taking in the surrounding nature that has also played a role in the island’s cultural narrative. The route, winding through pine forests and craggy hills, offers a peaceful contrast to the monastery’s history. It’s a chance to reconnect with the land that has witnessed the ebb and flow of the island's story. The hike provides panoramic views, inviting reflection on the intertwining of nature, faith, and culture that makes Skiathos unique. We will have lunch after the hike before returning to the resort. Afternoon yoga will be offered followed later by a group dinner. Overnight: Kassandra Bay Resort*****

The hike will lead us through olive groves and into a series of lush valleys, ending at a stretch of white sand beach, perfect for swimming in the Aegean waters. For lunch, we’ll stay at this beach to dine at a local taverna renowned for its traditional Greek dishes and coastal ambiance. You’ll have a chance to rest and swim in the ocean. In the afternoon, we will return to the resort to unwind with a spa treatment or a relaxing dip in the pool. The day will end with a group dinner. Overnight: Kassandra Bay Resort*****

Day 7-May 22

Private Boat trip to Lalaria Beach and Tsougrias Island; (B/L/D)

We will embark on an exciting boat trip around the unforgettable Lalaria Beach and Tsougrias Island, where we can swim in the crystal-clear waters and explore the island's secluded sea caves Skotini and Galazia. Located on the north coast and only accessible by boat, the caves are characterised by their difference in colour. Skotini is the dark cave with a low and narrow entrance blocking most light from entering. Galazia is the blue cave and is larger than Skotini. The waters glow an otherworldly color and its reflections dance on the cave’s textured rocks. For lunch, we will enjoy fresh, local dishes at a taverna on Tsougrias Island, a perfect spot to take in the views. Afterward, we’ll have some free time to relax at Megali Ammos Beach. The day will conclude with a delightful dinner of delicious Greek specialties.

Day 8-May 23

Morning Yoga; Skiathos Town; Local Feast and Traditional Music; (B/L/D)

We will begin the day with a grounding morning yoga session and a last morning of relaxation at the resort. We will head to town for lunch and any final shopping.
Time permitting in the afternoon, a local farmer will offer a demonstration of the ways the Skiathos community works in harmony with the land. We'll hear how traditional and innovative farming practices honor the interwoven roles of plants, animals, and people, nurturing the land as a living, interconnected system rather than treating it as a single-purpose resource.
As the sun begins to dip, we will gather with the local community for a joyful feast. Traditional food, music and dancing will carry you into the night, inviting you to experience the island’s rich culture through rhythm, movement, and shared celebration.
