The Lakes District
(Coast to Coast West), England

July 10-18, 2027

Overview of the Coast to Coast Walk West in the Lakes District

Experience the spectacular opening section of Wainwright's legendary Coast to Coast Walk as we journey from the Irish Sea into the heart of England's Lake District. Our approximately 50-mile route begins on the cliffs of St Bees and heads west through remote valleys, mountain passes, and some of the Lake District National Park’s finest scenery. We walk beside Ennerdale Water and Grasmere, cross Greenup Edge, and climb Kidsty Pike (2,560 ft/780 m), the highest point on the Coast to Coast route, as the landscape changes from dramatic coastline and farmland to ancient woodlands, glacial valleys, lakes, and open fells.

Created by Alfred Wainwright in 1973 and officially designated a National Trail in 2025, the Coast to Coast Walk is widely regarded as one of the world's great long-distance hikes. July’s mild temperatures (60–70°F/16–21°C), wildflowers, and frequent wildlife sightings provide excellent walking conditions. This itinerary combines the trail's most dramatic western stages with four-star accommodations and time to enjoy the welcoming villages of Grasmere and Glenridding. As Wainwright wrote, “Surely there cannot be a finer itinerary for a long distance walk.”

Day 2

Transfer from Manchester or London to Workington; (D)

Workington is most conveniently reached from Manchester Airport, with direct rail connections available via Preston and Carlisle. The journey typically takes 2.5–3.5 hours, depending on connections. Travelers arriving into London Heathrow can reach Workington by train in approximately 5-6 hours, traveling via London Euston and Carlisle. While the journey is longer, it is straightforward and offers a comfortable way to travel through the English countryside before arriving in Cumbria. Located on the Cumbrian coast at the edge of the Lake District, Workington provides an ideal base for the start of our Coast to Coast adventure. The town offers a range of restaurants, cafés, and shops, while St Bees—the traditional starting point of the Coast to Coast Walk—is only a short drive away. After checking into our hotel, the remainder of the day is free to relax and recover from your journey. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner where we'll meet fellow travelers, review the itinerary, and discuss the days ahead as we prepare to cross the Lakes District on foot. Overnight: Washington Central Hotel & Spa, Workington offers comfortable accommodations in the heart of town, along with an indoor pool, spa facilities, fitness center, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel features an on-site restaurant and lounge bar, providing a convenient and relaxing base before the start of our walk. Its location allows easy access to both the coast and the western Lake District, making it an excellent gateway to the Coast to Coast Trail.

Day 3

Hike St Bees – Cleator (6.5 miles/9km); optional 6 mile extension to Ennerdale Bridge; (B/L)

After breakfast, we transfer to the seaside village of St Bees, the traditional starting point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. Following tradition, we'll dip a boot in the Irish Sea before setting off along the dramatic cliffs of St Bees Head, home to one of England's largest seabird colonies. The trail then leaves the coastline behind, crossing rolling farmland, quiet country lanes, and the small villages of Sandwith and Moor Row before reaching Cleator, a former mining village where we stop for lunch. Those looking for a shorter introduction to the Coast to Coast may finish the day's walk in Cleator and return to Workington by van. Guests seeking a greater challenge can continue on to Dent Fell, the first major ascent of the journey. From the summit, sweeping views extend across the Irish Sea to Scotland and the Isle of Man, while the mountains of the Lake District rise ahead. A scenic descent through the peaceful Nannycatch Valley brings us to Ennerdale Bridge, where our walk concludes before returning to Workington for a second evening. Overnight: Washington Central Hotel & Spa, Workington

Day 4

Hike Ennerdale Bridge – Honister Slate Mine (11 miles/17 km); Yoga (B/L)

After breakfast, we transfer back to Ennerdale Bridge to continue our Coast to Coast journey. The day begins with a peaceful walk along the southern shore of Ennerdale Water, one of the Lake District's most remote and unspoiled lakes. Following quiet woodland and lakeside paths, we gradually enter increasingly dramatic mountain scenery as the valley narrows beneath the surrounding fells. We can stop for a break at the remote and historic Black Sail Youth Hostel before ascending the Black Sail Pass, one of the classic sections of the Coast to Coast. Surrounded by some of England's highest peaks, including Great Gable and Haystacks, we continue past Loft Beck before making the final ascent to Honister Pass. Our walk ends at the historic Honister Slate Mine, where slate has been quarried since the 1600s and where a modern via ferrata now offers adventurous visitors a different way to experience the landscape. From here, we transfer to Grasmere, our home for the next three nights. A late afternoon recovery yoga session will be offered. Often considered the heart of the Lake District, Grasmere is one of the region's most attractive villages. Although it can be busy, it remains easy to see why William Wordsworth described it as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found” more than 200 years ago. Wander its historic streets lined with slate buildings, browse independent galleries and outdoor shops, visit Dove Cottage where Wordsworth lived, or sample the famous Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread, still made to the original recipe. Overnight: The Daffodil Hotel & Spa, Grasmere offers a stylish lakeside retreat in the heart of the Lake District, combining modern comfort with beautiful views of Grasmere Lake and the surrounding fells. The hotel features spacious rooms, a full-service spa, indoor pool, fitness facilities, and an on-site restaurant overlooking the water. Its location provides easy access to walking trails, village cafés, and local attractions, making it an ideal base for the Coast to Coast Walk in one of the Lake District’s most picturesque villages.

Day 5

Hike Borrowdale – Grasmere (9 miles/14.5 km); (B/L)

After breakfast, we transfer to Borrowdale to rejoin the Coast to Coast trail. The day begins with a steady climb through one of the Lake District's most beautiful valleys, following mountain streams toward Greenup Edge. From the pass, expansive views stretch across the surrounding fells, with Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, dominating the skyline. From Greenup Edge, we descend through the scenic Easedale Valley, passing waterfalls, open moorland, and grazing Herdwick sheep before arriving in the picturesque village of Grasmere. Overnight: The Daffodil Hotel & Spa, Grasmere

Day 6

Yoga; Rest Day in Grasmere; optional walk to Ambleside (5.5 miles/9 km); (B)

Mid-morning recovery yoga will be offered. A rest day in Grasmere gives you the chance to explore at your own pace. Browse the village's independent shops, galleries, and cafés, visit Dove Cottage, the former home of William Wordsworth, or sample the famous Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread. You may also enjoy a swim in Grasmere on a warm afternoon. For those who prefer to keep walking, an optional morning hike to Ambleside via Loughrigg Terrace follows the shores of Grasmere and Rydal Water through peaceful woodland and scenic viewpoints before descending into the lively town of Ambleside, where you can explore and have lunch at your leisure. Alternatively, take a bus to nearby Bowness-on-Windermere to visit The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, enjoy a cruise on Lake Windermere, or simply relax and recharge before continuing the trail. Overnight: The Daffodil Hotel & Spa, Grasmere

Day 7

Hike Grasmere – Patterdale (7 miles/11km); (B/L)

Leaving Grasmere, we climb over Grisedale Hause before descending through the beautiful Grisedale Valley. As Ullswater comes into view, we continue into Patterdale with a short transfer to our next hotel in Glenridding, ideally situated on the shores of England's second-largest lake. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy the lakeside setting or relax at our hotel. Village of Glenridding is at the head of Ullswater which is often described as the most beautiful of all the Cumbrian lakes. Overnight: Inn on the Lake, Glenridding, a classic four-star lakeside hotel set on the shores of Ullswater. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens with direct lake access, the hotel offers comfortable rooms, an inviting lounge and bar, and spectacular views across the water to the surrounding fells—the perfect setting to celebrate the completion of our journey.

Day 8

Hike Patterdale - Burnbanks (11.5 miles/18.5 km); Yoga (B/D)

Today's highlight is the ascent to Kidsty Pike (780 m), the highest point on Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. The steady climb is rewarded with panoramic views across the Lake District before we descend to Haweswater Reservoir. Our walk finishes at Burnbanks, where our support vehicle meets us for the short transfer back to Glenridding. If the weather is poor, with heavy rain or low cloud, we can instead take the Ullswater Steamer to Pooley Bridge for a lower-level route. The boat journey is a memorable experience in any weather. Those who prefer a more relaxed day can remain in Glenridding, with opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, or a scenic cruise on Ullswater. In the late afternoon we gather for a closing yoga session followed by a farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of our Coast to Coast adventure. Overnight: Inn on the Lake, Glenridding
