Activity Level Grades for PTY

Our activity grading guidelines are designed to give you a clear idea of what to expect on your trip and how challenging it will be. The grade reflects the overall difficulty of the trip, although some days may be more challenging than others. You know your own abilities best, so while we encourage you to challenge yourself, it's important to choose a trip that matches your fitness level and walking experience. Our activity grades will help you select the right adventure so you can enjoy your trip comfortably, safely, and with confidence. If you're unsure which trip is right for you, the trip leaders are always happy to offer advice or address any concerns you may have.

1

Easy

Daily Distance: 0–4 miles (0–6 km)
Short walks on relatively flat, well-maintained paths and tracks with minimal ascent. Routes are easy to follow and ideal for those with little or no previous walking holiday experience, or anyone looking for a relaxed pace.

2

Easy – Moderate

Daily Distance: 4–7 miles (6–11 km)
Gentle to moderate daily walks on well-maintained trails, country paths, and quiet roads. Some hills and uneven terrain can be expected, but ascents and descents are generally gradual. Suitable for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

3

Moderate

Daily Distance: 7–10 miles (11–16 km)
Longer days on varied terrain with regular ascents and descents. Trails may be uneven or rocky in places, requiring a good level of fitness. Best suited to regular walkers or active beginners looking for more of a challenge.

4

Moderate – Strenuous

Daily Distance: 10–12 miles (16–19 km)
Longer, more demanding days with sustained climbs and descents over rugged terrain. Some sections may be exposed and require a head for heights. A good level of fitness and previous walking experience are recommended.

5

Strenuous

Daily Distance: 12+ miles (19+ km)
Long days on challenging terrain with significant ascent and descent. Routes are often remote, and may include alpine or mountainous landscapes. Some walks may feature exposed sections. A high level of fitness, confidence on difficult terrain, and previous hiking experience are essential.
