The Yoga of Letting Go: Making Space for What Matters

As autumn invites us to slow down and shed what we no longer need, yoga offers a gentle reminder: sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is let go.

There’s something about October that encourages us to take a breath. The days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and nature begins its quiet transition inward. Trees release their leaves without a second thought, reminding us that letting go isn’t a loss. It’s a part of the rhythm of life.

Yet for many of us, letting go doesn’t come quite so easily. We hold on to expectations, old stories, packed schedules and the idea that we should somehow be doing more. We carry yesterday’s worries into today and tomorrow’s to-do lists into the present moment.

Yoga invites us to try something different.

The freedom of aparigraha

In yogic philosophy, aparigraha is the practice of non-attachment — learning to loosen our grip on the things we cling to, whether that’s possessions, expectations, outcomes or even our own ideas about how life should unfold.

It doesn’t mean giving up on the things we love or abandoning our ambitions. Instead, it asks us to notice when holding on too tightly keeps us from experiencing what’s right in front of us.

On the mat, this might mean releasing the urge to achieve the deepest expression of a pose and finding ease in the version that feels right for your body today. Off the mat, it could mean letting a conversation unfold without rehearsing what you’ll say next, changing a plan when circumstances shift, or allowing yourself a little breathing room in an otherwise busy day.

The practice is simple, but not always easy: meet the moment as it is, rather than insisting it be something else.

Let nature be your teacher

We don’t have to look far for a lesson in letting go. Nature offers one every day.

A tree doesn’t cling to its leaves because it’s afraid of what comes next. It releases them when the season changes, making room for a new cycle of growth. The landscape may look quieter, even bare, but beneath the surface, life continues.

We, too, move through seasons. There are times for action and expansion, and times for rest, reflection and renewal. When we allow ourselves to honour those shifts rather than resist them, we create space for new perspectives and possibilities.

This is one reason travel can be such a powerful companion to a yoga practice. Stepping outside our familiar routines invites us to loosen our grip on the expected. We learn to navigate the unfamiliar, embrace a change of plans, connect with people whose lives look different from our own and discover that the most memorable moments are often the ones we couldn't have planned.

Sometimes, a change of scenery is less about escaping our lives and more about seeing them with fresh eyes.

A five-minute practice in letting go

You don’t need a yoga mat, a mountain view or a week away to begin. Try this simple practice whenever you feel overwhelmed, stuck or ready for a reset.

  1. Pause. Find a comfortable seat and let your shoulders soften. Close your eyes if that feels comfortable, or simply lower your gaze.

  2. Breathe. Take five slow, unforced breaths. Notice the feeling of air moving in and out. There’s nothing to fix and nowhere else you need to be for these few moments.

  3. Notice. Ask yourself: What am I holding on to that I could gently release? Perhaps it’s an expectation, a worry, a frustration or the pressure to have everything figured out. You don’t need to solve it. Just acknowledge it.

  4. Soften your grip. With each exhale, imagine creating a little more space around whatever came to mind. You aren’t pretending the feeling doesn’t exist. You’re simply allowing it to be there without letting it take up all the room.

  5. Choose what matters. Ask yourself: What would I like to make more space for instead? Rest, connection, curiosity, laughter or a little adventure? Carry that intention with you as you return to your day.

Make room for what’s next

As we move into November, the invitation isn’t to clear our lives of every worry or tie up every loose end. It’s to recognise that we don’t have to carry everything with us.

We can release the need for perfection. We can make peace with changing plans. We can give ourselves permission to slow down, start again and discover something unexpected along the way.

The next time life feels a little too full, take a cue from the trees. Exhale. Loosen your grip. Trust that letting go can be its own kind of growth.

After all, making space for what matters often begins with releasing what doesn't.

May your November bring a little more breathing room, a little more wonder and plenty of opportunities to reconnect with yourself and the world around you.

With peace,

Stacy
