Overview of the Coast to Coast Walk West in the Lakes District

Experience the spectacular opening section of Wainwright's legendary Coast to Coast Walk as we journey from the Irish Sea into the heart of England's Lake District. Our approximately 50-mile route begins on the cliffs of St Bees and heads west through remote valleys, mountain passes, and some of the Lake District National Park’s finest scenery. We walk beside Ennerdale Water and Grasmere, cross Greenup Edge, and climb Kidsty Pike (2,560 ft/780 m), the highest point on the Coast to Coast route, as the landscape changes from dramatic coastline and farmland to ancient woodlands, glacial valleys, lakes, and open fells.

Created by Alfred Wainwright in 1973 and officially designated a National Trail in 2025, the Coast to Coast Walk is widely regarded as one of the world's great long-distance hikes. July’s mild temperatures (60–70°F/16–21°C), wildflowers, and frequent wildlife sightings provide excellent walking conditions. This itinerary combines the trail's most dramatic western stages with four-star accommodations and time to enjoy the welcoming villages of Grasmere and Glenridding. As Wainwright wrote, “Surely there cannot be a finer itinerary for a long distance walk.”

Day 4 – November 9

Marrakech to Imlil – Into the High Atlas Mountains

Today we leave the vibrant city of Marrakech behind and journey toward the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains. After an approximately 1½-hour scenic drive across the Haouz Plain, we’ll arrive in the remote village of Ikkis, nestled in the beautiful Imnane Valley. Our guided 3-4 hour hike begins with a steady ascent through traditional Berber landscapes to a mountain pass at approximately 6,500 feet, where we’ll pause to enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. From the pass, we’ll follow a winding mule trail down to the charming village of Aguersioual, where we’ll be welcomed with traditional Moroccan mint tea at a Berber family lodge. After a relaxing break in the shade, we’ll continue along the picturesque valley to Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal and the starting point for many High Atlas expeditions. For those who prefer a shorter day, transportation is available from Aguersioual to Imlil. Overnight (2 nights) Kasbah Du Toubkal is an award-winning eco-lodge nestled in Morocco’s spectacular High Atlas Mountains above the Berber village of Imlil, about 90 minutes from Marrakech. Perched at 1,800 meters (5,900 feet), the boutique retreat offers breathtaking mountain views, authentic Berber hospitality, comfortable rooms, rooftop terraces, a traditional hammam, and delicious Moroccan cuisine. It serves as an ideal base for hiking, cultural experiences, and exploring Toubkal National Park while supporting the local community through sustainable tourism initiatives. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – November 10

Explore the High Atlas Mountains

Today offers two wonderful ways to experience the beauty and culture of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Choose the option that best matches your energy level and hiking experience. Option 1 – Leisurely Village Walk Enjoy a relaxed morning at the hotel before setting out on a gentle walk to the traditional Berber village of Aremd (approximately 45–60 minutes). Take in the stunning mountain scenery, learn about daily life in the village, and savor a picnic lunch surrounded by nature before returning to Imlil along a different scenic trail. Option 2 – Hike to Sidi Chamharouch For those looking for a more adventurous day, we’ll follow a mountain trail alongside a rushing stream toward the sacred site of Sidi Chamharouch. Along the way, we’ll pass through the village of Aremd, perched on an ancient glacial moraine, before the landscape opens into dramatic alpine terrain. Nestled at the junction of two valleys, Sidi Chamharouch is one of Morocco’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Unlike many shrines dedicated to historical figures, this sacred place is associated with a spiritual being and has long attracted visitors seeking healing, protection, and blessings. It also serves as a popular rest stop for trekkers making their way toward Mount Toubkal Base Camp. After taking time to rest and enjoy the mountain views, we’ll return to Aremd for a picnic lunch before hiking back to Imlil. In the afternoon, both groups will visit a local women’s cooperative, where you’ll learn how traditional crafts are created while supporting women who are preserving Morocco’s rich cultural heritage and contributing to their local economy. This evening, return to the comfort of Kasbah du Toubkal for gentle yoga and enjoy another peaceful night in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. (B, L, D)

Day 6 – November 11

Imlil to Ouirgane

After breakfast, we’ll leave Imlil and enjoy a scenic one-hour drive to Marigha, where today’s hike begins. (2 ½ hr – 3 ½ hours of hiking depending on your preferred walking option) Our trail leads through the beautiful Azaden Valley, one of the High Atlas Mountains’ most picturesque landscapes. We’ll cross a mountain stream and walk through the traditional Berber villages of Torot and Anraz, surrounded by terraced fields, walnut trees, and sweeping mountain views. Along the way, we’ll visit a historic Berber Jewish cemetery, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, where Berber and Jewish communities lived side by side for centuries. From Anraz, we’ll continue on a gentle uphill trail through a fragrant juniper forest to our scenic picnic lunch location. For those who prefer a shorter walk, transportation is available from Anraz to the lunch stop. After lunch, enjoy a short 15-minute stroll to our welcoming mountain lodge, Kasbah La Dame Bija. The afternoon is yours to relax, enjoy the tranquil surroundings, or simply soak in the beauty of the Atlas Mountains. Gentle yoga will be offered before dinner. Overnight (1 night) Nestled in the peaceful High Atlas Mountains, Kasbah La Dame Bija offers a beautiful escape surrounded by the natural landscapes of Ouirgane. Day 7 – November 12

Ouirgane to the Agafay Desert

After breakfast, we’ll take a short 10-minute drive to the trailhead for a leisurely morning walk through the beautiful Ouirgane countryside. Our path winds past cultivated fields, olive groves, and traditional Berber villages as we make our way to Marigha (approximately 1 hour). We’ll be welcomed into a local family home to enjoy traditional Moroccan mint tea, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of Berber culture. We then rejoin our vehicle and travel to Lalla Takerkoust, where we’ll enjoy lunch overlooking the tranquil lake with the Atlas Mountains as our backdrop. In the afternoon, we’ll continue to the spectacular Agafay Desert, often called the “Stone Desert of Marrakech.” Unlike the Sahara’s rolling sand dunes, Agafay is a dramatic landscape of rocky hills and sweeping plains that stretches for miles beneath the towering High Atlas Mountains. The ever-changing light transforms the desert throughout the day, creating breathtaking scenery, especially as the sun begins to set behind the snow-capped peaks. For those seeking a little extra adventure, an optional one-hour ATV (quad bike) excursion is available to explore the desert’s rugged terrain. Tonight we’ll experience the magic of glamping beneath the Moroccan sky at the luxurious Les Terrasses of Aquafay. Each beautifully appointed private tent features a king-size bed, comfortable sitting area, and private bathroom, blending modern comfort with the unforgettable serenity of the desert. Overnight (1 night) Les Terrasses of Auafay is a luxury desert camp nestled in Morocco’s stunning Agafay Desert, about 45 minutes from Marrakech. Surrounded by dramatic rocky desert landscapes with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop, the camp features elegant safari-style tents with private bathrooms, swimming pools, gourmet Moroccan cuisine, and unforgettable sunsets. We’ll pause beneath the shade of these remarkable trees for a relaxing picnic lunch before continuing our approximately 3½-hour drive to Essaouira, a charming UNESCO World Heritage city known for its whitewashed buildings, blue shutters, vibrant fishing port, and laid-back coastal atmosphere. Before returning to Essaouira, we’ll visit a women’s argan oil cooperative, where you’ll learn about the traditional methods of producing Morocco’s famous “liquid gold.” This visit also supports local women who preserve this centuries-old craft while creating sustainable economic opportunities for their communities. A gentle yoga class will be offered late afternoon. The evening is yours to explore Essaouira at your leisure. Wander through the charming medina, browse artisan shops, or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the city’s inviting waterfront restaurants. Overnight (2 nights) Dar Amastan is tucked within the heart of Essaouira’s historic medina, Dar Amastan is a beautifully restored 19th-century riad that blends traditional Moroccan craftsmanship with modern comfort. Its intimate setting features just 11 individually designed rooms and suites, surrounding a peaceful courtyard adorned with handcrafted cedar, colorful zellige tilework, and traditional tadelakt finishes.
