Thirteen adventure seekers had an unforgettable journey through northern Thailand with our fearless leader, Christine Klotz.
It is difficult to fully capture the beauty and depth of this experience—it was one of the most all-encompassing trips I have ever taken. In Chiang Rai, we explored breathtaking temples, including the iconic White Temple, symbolizing heaven, and the striking Blue Temple, known as the People’s Temple. We also visited the intriguing Black House, representing hell—a powerful and thought-provoking reminder to live well.
One of the most awe-inspiring experiences was our visit to the elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. This expansive haven is home to 110 rescued and rehabilitated elephants including Wan Mai, a young elephant sponsored by PTY. We were able to carefully walk among them and take photos—an experience that was nothing short of extraordinary.
Our time in Chiang Mai was filled with adventure and reflection. We hiked to waterfalls, participated in a forest meditation and a Monk’s Trail meditation, enjoyed traditional Thai massages, and even climbed the famous “sticky” limestone waterfall. Along the way, our group was often complimented for being especially supportive and helpful. I personally appreciated the steady hands offered during the jungle hikes and waterfall climbs. We truly followed Christine’s example, along with her exceptional team of guides and our wonderful yoga teacher, Chris.
Among the many highlights were the towering statue of Guan Yin, which greets visitors to Chiang Rai and seems to watch over the entire city; the orphanage we visited before leaving Chiang Mai; and the beautiful resorts where we stayed.
Horizon Village & Resort offered comfortable rooms and enchanting grounds filled with animals, whimsical topiary sculptures, and peaceful walking trails—everything we could have wished for. Le Méridien Chiang Rai provided five-star luxury, with elegant rooms and water features surrounding much of the property. The yoga tree there offered a perfect setting for our daily sessions.
Before departing Chiang Mai, we visited a local orphanage. We donated supplies, helped feed the babies, and spent time playing with the children. Chris led us in song, and when the children joined in, there was not a dry eye in sight. It was a deeply moving experience.
I am grateful for the opportunity to visit such a remarkable country—and even more grateful that we were able to leave behind something meaningful in return for all that we received.
